The origins of Poodles
Country of Origin
There are some conflicting opinions regarding the poodles' country of origin. The two possible origins are Germany and France. Many people associate poodles with France due to their extreme popularity in this country. In reality, their real origin most probably is Germany, where the early poodles were used for duck hunting. Albrecht Dürer's numerous paitings also features poodles, therefore we can assume that the breed developed around the XIV-XI century. In the medieval France, XVI. Louis King used to have poodles in his imperial court. Regulated poodle breeding has first started in Germany more than 100 years ago. In the XVIII century's Spain the breed was the most popular among aristocrats, which could be proven by Goya's paintings.
Roles of Poodles
The french word "caniche" (poodle) is originated from the word "cane", which means female duck. The german word "Pudel" means 'splash'.
Originally the breed was used to support hunting around waters. In other languages the name of the breed is usually associated with splashing in water. The hungarian word 'uszkár' comes from the period of language renewal, and its root means swimming. Until the end of the XIX. century poodles were popular mainly among aristocrats. After the end of the century their role in hunting declined and they became more and more famous with their circus performances. However, they maintained their noble status, and remained extremely fashionable for rich families.
